i was flying from San Luis Obispo, in California, and on my way back to Santa Monica, I was flying right next to Vandenberg AFB, and saw a missile just randomly launch out of the sky. I was about 5 miles away from it (still outside of the restricted airspace around the AFB), and it was really cool.
So I contacted SoCal Approach and said "SoCal, this is 67AF, I just saw a missile fly out of the ground!" They replied with "67AF, there was indeed a scheduled launch today from Vandenberg AFB". Then I hear a few comments of "Thats so awesome!" and "Oh I wish I saw that!" on the radio.
When I got back to Santa Monica and told the tale of the missile, even pilots with 20 years of service never saw such a thing from the sky.
Talk about right place, right altitude, right direction, right weather conditions, and right time.
Just wanted to share that with you all.
