Hi Dan:

My personal opinion is that tortoises need their own space. If you are concerned that the tortoise isn't getting enough exercise, then the tortoise's space is probably too small. For an adult Russian tortoise 4'x8' would be a minimum amount of space.

If you were to get down on your carpet with a magnifying glass and take a good look at tortoise eye level, you would see all kinds of things laying around that would be harmful to a tortoise. One of our members was asking why her little sulcata that was allowed free range in the house was ill and when she took it to the vet, found out it was impacted. She didn't say why, but a darned good reason might be because it ate something off the floor that is holding waste from processing.

Can you make a temp. outdoor enclosure for the tortoise?

@yvonne -
.....what does impacted mean? do you mean that the sulcata was just like affected, or...?

@Dcallen89 -
i let my tort ayden run around in the spare room and i though the room is clear other than a shelf and a laundry basket, i always just keep a close eye on him just in case. if you keep a close eye on your tort then you should either be fine or youll know that it isn't fine because of something that your tort finds or does that could cause trouble.

Impacted means when they can't go poop, usually from something they ate, that can't pass now. Just some of the many things tortois have eaten, dry wall,dust bunnies, mardi gras beads, plastic bags, buttons, rocks and much much more.

Impacted means there's a blockage in the system someplace. It might be blocked where the food leaves the stomach, or blocked in one of the intestines, or even at the cloaca.
