I agree with you except the vet care part. Vet care is very expensive where I live. Some states/cities much cheaper. I have had pet insurance before and its barely helpful.
The standard of veterinary care and owners’ expectations have soared in tbe past 20 years so also the cost of running a practice. Most veterinarians make less money per hour than plumbers . Sorry - but many folks complaining about their vet bills are driving new cars and own the newest iPhones If you want a breakdown of what it takes to become a veterinarian and run a 24 hour facility I am happy to oblige you for a few hours

A good friend of mine is a Vet and until she opened her own practice it was like hourly labor rates. Now she has two Vets working for her and is doing well. Now my Animal Eye Surgeon is another story, but then again he is a specialist (horses too) and does fantastic work. I have seen some awesome stitch work by some Vets I have known and have been amazed at their high skill level of stitch work compared to the average human Doc. Now my irritation a pet is a privilege not a right people confuse the two all the time. When I was young my fishing gear was hand me down and super auction finds. Now I am just slightly more picky, but love the old penn reels!

My biggest irritation...a person has just joined the forum because he/she has (or thinks he has) an emergency of some sort. OP posts a long story of the situation, desperately pleading for help. "My tortoise peed white goop!! What do I do?!" Or this, which actually happened late one night, "We just found our tortoise at the bottom of the pool! What do we do?!"

Multiple members spend time and energy typing out thoughtful explanations and suggestions to fix the emergency.

Without so much as a 'like', the OP is never seen again after the 1st post.

The next day I search for a followup and there's nothing. I want to grab the OP and shake him, screaming "WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TORTOISE!!?"

That's okay. I know all about it. I used to work for one. I also know what I pay when I take an aninal in and what it actually cost to the vet. You can't tell me anything I don't know, nor can you fool me, sorry.
Been on both sides.

I’m guessing this is probably a good discussion for a new, separate thread. That said - a lot comes down to overhead costs as well. Heat, lighting, rent, all the disposable supplies, cleaning, snow removal of parking lot, a receptionist, an assistant or two, all of the office supplies, light bulbs, etc. it all adds up in the overhead charges. A quick visit for anything has to take into account all of those “other” hidden costs.

There is no need to be rude , insulting or condescending. I have no reason to ever try to fool anyone. You may have worked for a veterinarian but I am one. For close to 40 years. The last 32 in emergency medicine and surgery. My ethics and professionalism have never been questioned.
I thought this forum was a friendly place to share experiences. I see I am incorrect

Oh, not saying they don't have overhead. Even location in the same city, like mine, Chicago, will dictate different prices. I'm just saying, it's not cheap and the markup is horrendous. I am very happy to have them and have paid over my fair share.

Whoa, step it back. I didn't attack your ethics or professionalism. I know you are one it's obvious in your forum name.
I'm just simply stated I already know! I worked every aspect of the vet clinic. It was me and the Vet and we did almost it all. I also know some of the BS straight from several vets mouths.
You wanted to defend the cost and your field, that's fine. But also be prepared to take some heat.
Geez!
