This is "Big Momma". She is one of my South African leopards from the 2010 batch and around 1000 grams now. I say "she" because the breeder told me that split scuted ones are almost always female. Well the keyword there should have been "almost". I've never seen a split scuted male, but he has seen a lot more than me.

Big Momma showed me she was a he during the warm water rinse after a soak. It seems he wasn't quite done pooping and decided to evert his penis while finishing his poop. Well the males are very hard to come by, so I have to say that I am glad that she is a he. Now I know I have at least one male. All 9 of mine still look nearly identical to each other as far as tail size and anal scutes. No dimorphism yet.

Jacqui, are you seeing this? The exceptions are building...

I've said right from the beginning that mine are male. Mine are from the same batch as yours. And my biggest one weighs 2lbs also.

sigh.... "Gaia" aint no male name thats for sure! and she has 2 split scutes.

But I have no problems renaming retiles, simply because their names mean nothing to them.... I think "Gaia" could easily turn into "Guy"!

You are right but "Big Poppa" just doesn't have the same "ring" to it....

Maybe he'll have to be "The Dude"... maybe he will abide...

I'm sure I see tail growth on my largest, but the others "?" Let's just hope that they're not all males.

He looks great Tom. Can we see a pic of the underside? At that weight, how long is he now?

Looks good.

There was a recent thread here from another male leopard owner with split scutes. It happens quite a bit, but I think more often than not, split scutes tortoises are female. It's just not guaranteed.

Yes, it is a correlation only.

Anyone want to fathom a guess for what percentage of split scuted leopards are female?

For the heck of it, I'd say 80% female 20% male.
