hello everyone, my wife and I are interested in becoming sulcata owners. We are aware they become large and have been doing our research, we found a few places around our area "Houston" and on the Internet, we've read about Arizona tortoise compound and a few others. Seeing if y'all might a few places or ideas so we can go in the right direction. We just want some healthy happy sulcatas to add to our family.

Many members here sell them. Don't be afraid to have one shipped to you either. A good source is very important and shipping overnight is just fine on the tort.

Did you check out the breeder list? For some reason I'm having trouble tagging right now..

No I have not, the wife and kid are asleep and I've seen this page and decided to make a account. That was a concern about shipping them, but we have noticed a lot of people do it. I also did not know there was a breeder page and I will definitely check it out. Thank you for your reply

Shipping reptiles including sulcatas is very safe as long as the shipper packages correctly, uses a reliable currier(such as Fedex or UPS) and is aware of the weather and delivery times. I have been shipping reptiles for over 17 years. It is a very safe process.
I currently have some baby sulcatas available as well. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Read this thread BEFORE you buy or even contact any breeders. It will tell you what you need to ask of the breeder to make sure you don't buy a ticking time bomb. What is, or isn't, done with these babies in the first few days and weeks makes a monumental difference in how things go for you down the road.

Then read these to get even farther ahead on what you need to do:

I don't have any for sale right now, but Lance, the guy who posted right above me is a great baby starter. Many of the gorgeous healthy tortoises seen on this site came from him. To date he has a track record of 100% success, something that cannot be said about some other sellers.

Come back with any and all questions after reading those threads.

I noticed you said you wanted to add some "healthy happy sulcatas" to your family. Not sure if you know this but sulcatas do NOT do well in pairs. I highly recommend reading the links above so you can get some valuable info before you buy. I will say this, my guy came from @Lancecham - great guy and if you raise them right your gonna have a beautiful tort!

Is that just yard grass in his food dish??
No, it's grass and various weeds that I planted in a pot that I grow. It's not from my lawn. You can give them grass from your lawn as long as it doesn't have fertilizer or pesticide chemicals.

We are about to order a self ballasted mercury vapor flood lamp, calcium powder no d3, and multi vitamins, and a few cuttlebones. Going to grab some soil for the indoor and outdoor pins, does that sound like everything I need?? Should I get a red lamp for night time?? Sry with all the questions just want to do this right

Get some TNT as well from Carolina pet supply. They also sell various seeds you can plant to grow. Don't use red bulbs for at night. Use a ceramic heat emitter like this

Did you read the care sheet?

The open top kiddie pool isn't going to give you the right habitat for a baby. They need it hot and humid to mimic the monsoon season in Africa. You'll need a closed chamber/ vivarium type of indoor enclosure.

You'll also read about the temperatures needing to be above 80°f at all times. A CHE set on a thermostat is what you need.

We are not going to leave him in there all the time we just want a place for outdoors, so he can exercise and catch natural sun light. Also be a garden for food for him, rather grow it then buy it. I did read the care sheet and so did my wife

Mercury Vapor bulbs are good for open topped large enclosures. They run hot. So hot that I can't use them in my 4x8' large closed chambers. Babies really do best in closed chambers.

I prefer calcium with D3, but either will be fine.

I would not use soil as an enclosure substrate. Outdoors it should be fine if you are trying to grow food in it. Indoors orchid bark works best.

You should NOT use a red lamp at any time. You should use a ceramic heating element set on a thermostat.

All of this and more is explained right here: http://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/how-to-raise-a-healthy-sulcata-or-leopard-version-2-0.79895/

I get fine grade "Pathway Bark" from Lowes for about $5 per 2.0 cubic foot bag. You can usually find orchid bark at garden centers too.

I would not use "soil" or "top soil".
