Anyone ever use these? They were recommended to me by a friend as something to keep on hand in case we lose power for multiple days over winter. They seem to come in different "lengths" in terms of how many hours they last....I realize they are made for shipping purposes, but would they help...
So......as we move into fall/rainy/cold weather in Maryland (soon to be followed by winter/snow) we are planning an alternative to outdoor time since Twizzler live indoors regularly, but goes outside with us every afternoon now. I bought a new vinyl table cloth that will cover whole floor of one...
So, I finally found a local produce market that had mustard greens, turnip greens, collard greens (etc) way cheaper than grocery store. Very happy that I now have more options and can give Twizzler more variety. Even though he was fed this morning, I gave him a snack and he LOVED the turnip...
So, we all know that russians like to climb and are good at climbing! That said, for an indoor enclosure, is it good idea to purposely put things in there for him to climb on/over/etc? I want to make sure it isn't something that could fall over and injure him.
Thanks!
I see another thread about this, but it is no longer opened to new messages, so...... here goes. I lived in the mid-Atlantic part of the United States. If we lose power, mainly in winter, any tips for keeping our tortoise from freezing to death? We are having horrible thunder/lightning storm...
I know that zucchini and cantaloupe are okay for occasional treats, as are carrots (if I am wrong, PLEASE correct me!). By occasional, can they have one of these things weekly or should it be less frequent than that?
Also, do we cut it up into small chunks or what is best way to offer it? I...
So, we know we need to wash hands after handling our little guy, or after touching anything in his habitat, but question..... if he has lived inside for 5 years now, would he "suddenly" contract salmonella? I mean, is this a concern down the road or only when you first get a new reptile...
Hello,
I know most folks recommend soaking in morning before he is already warmed up, which makes sense. But, once we go back to work/school next week, his outdoor time will be later afternoon/early evening......so he'll get fresh air and sun, but not exactly "hot basking sun." We've been...
Took Twizzler outside at home for first time today and it was a huge success. He wandered around the yard for about 30 minutes and we sort of scooted around on grass staying within a couple feet of him, but giving him space. Only pulled head into shell once or twice. Then, second soaking for 20...
So, I know we are supposed to spot clean regularly, but we are not seeing anything that appears to be pee or poop to clean out. He has passed white gooey stuff when soaking (pee???), but not sure what exactly we are looking for to clean. Does it blend in with the substrate? He is very active...
So...... on day 3 - 4 now (got him midday Sunday). Twizzler is definitely more active now. Was thinking he would just sit and bask in one spot most of day. But, he is going back and forth, in and out of water, same as yesterday. We hear lots of clunking around but are trying not to hover...
We did it......and he didn't drown and he didn't totally hate it! He didn't love it, but he didn't really protest and only mildly tried to climb up the wall a couple times. We were planning on 10 minutes for first time but went for the whole 20 minutes! Were we supposed to dry him off or...
So, when I first did my research I found much information saying "reptibark" (or anything similar) was bad for russian tortoise cause they might eat it. So, we put in all coco coir stuff. Granted we are only on day 2 here, but he spent about 30 minutes earlier today kind of running around his...
1. We are on day 2 now. We regulated lighting for a full week before getting him.Warm side goes between 89 - 92 for 12 hours a day. He spending much of the day 3/4 in his hide....with just small portion of his backside sticking out towards warm side. Thoughts?
2. I've read that Hibiscus is...
Finally. ....just picked up our newest family member. Welcome to the family, Twizzler!
Thanks to all of you for your helpful advice and patience... I am sure there will be many more to come!
I'm sure this is not the right place to post this, but I couldn't figure out where to go, so here I am! Well, after a couple weeks of soaking up knowledge from you all, we are finally picking up our rescued/adopted russian tortoise tomorrow. He is approximately 5 years old and I will post...
Hi......I've looked at other threads and care sheets, but I have two questions that I need answered......
We are adopting a 5 year old russian tortoise who is used to being fed late afternoon each day (due to work, school schedules). We will stick with this plan.
1. Is there a specific size of...
Hello..... what is the appropriate range for the "cool" side of our tortoise habitat for indoor enclosure? I've read different things on different sites. Thanks!
Any opinion as to whether a male or female are better for first time russian tortoise? Didn't occur to me to ask this before!
Also..... cannot afford to spend a fortune..... supplies for habitat are already costing enough! I see that there are lots of places that sell them on line, but it...
Hoping to get our Russian Tortoise within next couple of weeks. We are in process of creating habitat and purchasing necessary items. Trying to see if there is a checklist anywhere to make sure we haven't forgotten anything (other than "salad stuff").
If there is such a thing, can someone...
