I have a nearly full grown Russian tortoise female she seems a bit on the chunky side. I just got her a few days ago. She has been neglected, but seems rather healthy overall. Her beak is a bit overgrown and I will be working on remedying this. She eats like a champ. I know not to feed her fruit. I’m feeding spring mix, raspberry leaves, hibiscus leaves, and water hyacinths. Since it getttig cold I’ll switch to carrot tops and other greens from the grocery store instead of my garden. I’m wondering do I just give her what ever she will eat or can I over feed her. She does seem to leave some food and it’s not all gone daily. Here is a picture of her.
Also how bad is her beak? Could I take care of this myself with a nail file a bit at a time or should we take her to the vet? I’m not super concerned about the money with the vet I live in nys and it’s getting cold. Also she’s been in 4 different houses in 14 months and I’m building her a new cage next week. I’m more worried about the stress to her with all the constant change. I moved her home and she ate in about 5 minutes after me adding her back in so she seems to go with the flow honestly. I’m now feeding her on a slate rock to hopefully help keep her beaknjnder control.
