Wow, witnessed my first real tantrum tonight, which is how I found this forum as I thought my Ruby was possibly hurt or sick. It actually started a day ago when she found a piece of dry dog food on the floor. As it was hard and almost the size of her head my husband feared she would choke and took it away. I understood her anger then. Today when I got her out to run and petted her head she hissed and when I sat her on the floor she took off like mad. Must be starting her terrible 2's.

Hello and Welcome. Your husband was correct on worrying that she might choke on the piece of dog food. That's why it's a very bad idea to let your tort roam on the floor. The floor is a very dangerous place for a tort, specially a small one. Besides it's also too cold for them. We have already read a few threads that people have posted about their tort getting hurt cuz they were on the floor. Do your tort a big favor and let him/her enjoy the enclosure that is their own domain.

I understand from being on this site that it is OK to give your tortoises good quality (pellets) of either cat or dog food once in a while, but you must wet it and let is get soft first. My tortoises chow down happily on a little cat food around once a week.
Don't let them roam around on the floor, too many dangers and us humans are too prone to error and forgetting about some things, like "OMG.....who let Bowser inside? Where is Tortee???"
