So I figured I'd start a thread in here for my little guy rather than keeping it in the intro section! For any who don't know I am Whitney, I'm 26 and live in Arizona! T Rex is a redfoot and right now he is about 9 months old. I will be updating this thread with fun pics of T Rex as he grows and what not so feel free to stop by for the fun!

I am jealous! What an amazing looking Redfoot tortoise baby. I love your new enclosure too. I would get rid of the big wood bark chips and use Jungle mix though. Red foots do very well with moisture. Zilla seems to have 2 kinds? I like the one in the clear plastic bag like this link shows. Jungle mix is for tropical tortoises, the mixture holds moisture for humidity-loving reptiles such as frogs, rain forest geckos, toads and snakes, tonight I read on the bag it says Redfoot tortoises too. You could add some cocofiber to it. Sphagnum moss in the hides. If your tortoise has good nutrition, some UVB light with UVA, exercise, warmth, and attention, he will have a strong immune system, and things like shell rot won't be an issue.
Enjoy him :)

Thank you for the suggestion, I have never seen that type of bedding before. I have used Coco Coir and dislike it because my last tortoise ate and suffocated on it. I have a humidifier that should keep it pretty humid in his enclosure and I keep damp sphagnum in his hides. He has only been in the new larger enclosure for a few hours so I will have to see how everything (temps/humidity) work out in the new space!

It hasn't even been 24hrs since I put him in the new enclosure and he already found his way upstairs to his humid hide with no help! :D

I would also change the bedding personally. I use cypress mulch. Those are some big wood chunks and a small little tort. In my experience the larger bark also doesn't retain humidity as well as cypress mulch.

And that last photo is priceless haha.

Notes taken. I may put something under the orchid bark to hold more humidity. It worked perfectly fine in his small enclosure but this one is like 3+ times the size. Even the mist from his humidifier looks wimpy in this new one! It's only the 2nd night he has spent in this enclosure so I am sure I will have some time to do a little tweaking of things to get it just right.

Where do you have the mist entering the enclosure at?

The bottom right, next to his water dish. I have a tube hooked up to the humidifier and a hole in the enclosure that it runs through.

I used to have my humidifier tube running down into the tank and it was resting on the floor, but it didn't boost the humidity as high as I hoped, so I moved the end of the tube to the top, and all the fog had to fall downwards, instead of already being low and spreading. This helped boost the humidity a lot better for me.

I will have to test that out. Thanks again for the advice! I know I had it hanging from the top in the old tank and it seemed to fog up very well (on low). Now I have it on the highest setting and it's just coming out weak. I thought it may have just been soaking into the ground...

It probably is. Also when I had it on the floor, the substrate got so wet yet the humidity wasn't high enough, and the enclosure didn't have a liner and started leaking all over my carpet. Now I sealed the wood and have a liner. With the humidifier on top, I only have it on for about an hour a day, I also have 4 live plants in my enclosure to help.

So today after work I decided to dig a little ditch in T Rex's substrate in front of the humidifier tube opening. This seemed to help a ton! Now instead of just soaking into the bark directly in front of the opening, the mist is able to reach 3/4 of the way across his enclosure! Hopefully this easy fix will help. *fingers crossed*

Alright, so I just picked up some cypress mulch to put under his orchid bark! Hopefully this soaks up some of the water left from the humidifier. I also bought a couple thermometers, a hygrometer and his first cuttle bones. Unfortunately, his temps were 105 by the heat lamps so I turned off his CHE for now. I think it's crazy that it was this high because I used the same set up in his smaller tank and it was consistently in the 80s. Good news is his cold side was 88 and his humidity is currently reading 80% as well. Just got to bring his temps down a little and everything should be perfect! :D
