New to the forum. Been poking around for a bit, but thought I would say hello. This is my 4 year old's good buddy named Spike taking a soak, and though I'm much more of a bird kind of guy, I'm a pretty big tortoise fan as well. He keeps up with the lawn pretty well, doesn't dig, and is always psyched when we get home (due to the treats he is always getting from the kiddo)! Anyways, looking forward to browsing through the archives, and chatting torts.
All the best,
-Dan-

Welcome Dan:)

Very nice and thoughtful Sulcata you have there... Not destroying the lawn:)

There are a lot of Sulcata owners here and you'll have a blast!

Take care,

Joey

Welcome to the Forum. I use a similar kiddie pool for soaking my sulcata.

Thanks for the welcomes! You're right Joey, I do seem to be fortunate that he doesn't really dig much. My guess is that it's due to him having a huge corner of the yard covered in grape vines? I'm guessing he stays cool enough, and just doesn't have the urge? Here's to hoping it stays that way!

They sure are interesting as far as their devotion to routines. The big guy takes the same route, every time, every day. Yard stays golf course smooth in those sections, but as you can see from the picture, some sections just never get hit. Now if he would just spread his energies across the entire yard, we would be in business :).

That is a great looking tortoise Dan. Did you raise it from a hatchling? Where are you?

You don't usually see them this smooth at that size and age. Looks like he was raised well with humidity and hydration. Do you know if he was raised in the south?

Sorry Tom, but I do not know where he was raised. I did purchase him from an Oklahoma guy, but I'm pretty sure he was already large when he purchased him initially. His intent was for him to be one of his breeders, but I guess he wasn't getting the job done? Apparently he was too large for the females he was going to put him with? We didn't really get into many details.

I'm not sure which plant you are referring to, but the whole corner is green grapes that have since taken over due to lack of attention. The little tree at the corner of the building is a cherry tree, but it doesn't have any fruit on it.

Thanks! I told the wife every yard needed a good tortoise burrow, but she seemed less than pleased with that prospect. Fortunately, we havnt had to revisit the conversation!
