On Monday I impulsively bought a tortoise based upon research and a desire I have have had and completed 15 years ago as a young teenager. Needless to say I made an uninformed decision, albeit one that I truly feel is leading to a great adventure and I am very excited, although wish I would have found this site prior to my purchase! I bought a sulcata hatchling, whom I have been spoiling since he made it to my house :) I have been reading and reading and reading for the last few days about tortoise's and sulcatas in particular! Thank you so much for this forum and all of the amazing information. I am more in love with tortoise's than I even imagined and I am particularly enamored with sulcatas, BUT do not think that it is fair to keep one in the climate I live in! Just does not seem fair to the little bugger. So I am left with some options. The pet store I bought mine from will take him/her back and sell the little bugger to someone else....but not sure that this is right either as the pet store sold it to me and I can see someone else getting it who may not go online and do the research and then end up with this big turtle they can't care for. (I can hope a more informed buyer than me gets him) So do I keep it until it is too big and then find a better home for it? Although it will break my heart to say goodbye after all that attachment? Or do I find a more suitable tortoise breed for my home? I do want a medium sized tortoise although for an amazing personality and experience I am open to suggestions that may be a little smaller. I live in Minnesota, northern Minnesota at that so cold cold cold! Seems a hermann's or a redfoot would be good, but just want to hear about them and other's opinions. Really Really want to keep this sulcata, but like I said, it just does not seem fair to the turtle.

Well, u have a tuff decision. But, in my case, Indiana winters are very cold as well. I knew going into it Cooper is going to get huge. But I feel that I can provide for him for the rest of my life. He gets to go out a lot in the summer and in winter he will have his own spot to stay warm and happy in the house. It may not be the best option for him, but there is no way I could ever get rid of him now. Love that little buger to death. And chances r if u take him back he will end up with someone that has not had the good fortune to find this site! I sware way to many people never research their animals even after they get one. I wish u luck on your decision....

What is your sulcata's indoor life like? I feel like the more I hear the more I am going to be able to take this on....also what is his/her outdoor life like? I live in town, but am willing to give up the majority of my yard...

Missniecie~Would you mind telling us where you live, a little about your home, set up and yard? Maybe we can get some brain storming going. Also can we know your first name?
Good Luck!

My name is Niecie. I live in way Northern Minnesota. Our summers are about 4ish months long with a cool spring and a generally nice almost 2 month fall, although temps here in the evenings are 60 and below for 9 to 10 months out of the year. Winters are long and cold....I happen to live less than 30 minutes from one of the coldest spots in the country with winter temps that can on occasion get to 60 BELOW not counting wind chill, although my yard/location does not get that cold :( I have a large concrete basement that could be fixed up for something and by the time the babe gets big could have a main floor room of about 15'x8' fixed up, although reluctantly as I have two growing human babes too....My yard is not large, but I have no real devotion to keep pretty manicured green space, aside from my small garden so it could be devoted to the tortoise. I have not really named him/her yet as I don't want to get attached. Really thinking not the place for a sulcata....:(

Get a Hermann's...same friendly personality as the sulcata in a MUCH more easy-to-lift body!

BTW, I do know how you feel...I had a sulcata that I had to rehome about 18 mionths ago because she was getting too large for my injured spine to lift safely, and I still miss her at times.

And, like you, I bought her on a whim, w/ no thought about what I'd gotten myself into, for the first 7 years.

do you have a lot of property and money? then you could manage a large one,, but if not.. then it might be difficult.
maybe you can move south. :)
