New Russian Tortoise Owner

hello, we just purchased a Russian Tortoise for my son for Christmas but really have no idea what we are doing!

We have a tank with heat and UV light but we are unsure what type of base to use. What is best and how deep should it be. While we will help we are hoping to have our son do most of the work and show responsibility. So we are looking for lowest maintenance without sacrificing what’s best for our new pet.

Also what are the best “grocery store” foods to feed, I know they need a good variety.

We found ourselves in the same situation. Our Russian is happy and healthy and grazes all day. We initially went with alph alpha pellots but soon switched to regular ol' organic top soil for like $1.99 a bag.

For the base (which we call substrate) most members favor orchid bark, coco coir and fir bark. I like a mix.
