Apparently we have a situation with Aedes mosquitoes in SoCal. Want to spray them down but don't want to hurt the turtles, torts, cats, and dogs. Any recommendations?

There is a type of bug granules that you sprinkle around the area. I would not use it within the areas the tortoise, dog, cat can get too but on the outside of the perimeters

Permethrin fogger / mister will instantly knock down the mosquitos. It is considered safe for tortoises (tick treatments) and dogs. It is toxic to cats at high levels but when using a ULV sprayer the application rate is extremely low. We spray our property at night multiple times per month during the rainy season and haven't killed any of our animals yet, or even the bee hives that we keep. If we had a choice we wouldn't do it but our mosquito population gets out of hand quickly and we feel so bad for our animals.

Have you had them this year? Florida is a bizarre place for many reasons and mosquitoes is one of them. Some years we have them so thick in the summer that it's impossible to do nothing, so we fog. Some years, like this year, we barely see any.

They seem to be about normal this year. It was very dry up until august so we had a late start with the season. Most of ours are flood mosquitos so the eggs are just waiting there in the dirt for the rain to fall.
There are times when we go out to the chicken coop and there are tens of thousands of them in there. You can hear them buzzing around even over the noise of the chickens stomping and squawking out of annoyance. It is very satisfying to spray the coop and see the floor covered in upside down mosquitos.
You are right, it seems impossible not to spray sometimes. We regularly use the biological larvicides and we have tried to attract bats but if we didn't spray I think they would carry off our animals. I would like to put more effort into attracting bats in the future.
