after a bit of research i have changed my substrate to the sand mud mix, now treveys food gets put on a tile but he drags it off onto the sand and his food has some sand on it, is this ok?

That's why I don't like to use the coir/sand mixture. I don't like the long strings from the coir, and I don't like the sand. I've seen radiographs of baby desert tortoises that were impacted with sand. They usually die from it. But there are many, many tortoise keepers out there who use the coir/sand mixture and just love it. Its a personal choice.

Can you put a wider apron around the food slate? Like maybe a wide circle of smooth stones that he has to walk on before he reaches the food dish?
