I just rescued this from someone who didn't want it and I'm researching what its going to need. I've had iguanas as a kid and feel this might be similar. It all starts with knowing the particular species
Very nice-looking male Testudo horsefieldii (or Agrionemys horsefieldii, whichever book you're reading). The damage on the carapace is old and of no consequence.
so glad you rescued him/her! she's adorable and everyone here will be able to help you take excellent care of her. I have never seen she'll rot that makes me sad she/he had to endure that

Update.
The guy has been doing great. I dedicated a section of the garden to him and he's set of taking the whole back yard. Fortunately it's brick wall and cement with gates. Our small family dog goes and checks on him every day with zero aggression.
