I just rescued this from someone who didn't want it and I'm researching what its going to need. I've had iguanas as a kid and feel this might be similar. It all starts with knowing the particular species image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

Male Russian/Horsfield's with shell rot?

Let's see if I'm starting to "guess" correctly!

Thanks for taking him on. Poor guy needs some TLC.

Very nice-looking male Testudo horsefieldii (or Agrionemys horsefieldii, whichever book you're reading). The damage on the carapace is old and of no consequence.

As stated Russian. Please read the adult Russian caresheet under the Russian species section.

so glad you rescued him/her! she's adorable and everyone here will be able to help you take excellent care of her. I have never seen she'll rot that makes me sad she/he had to endure that

Does one do anything to tidy that shell up at all? A bit of scrubbing with a soft toothbrush to encourage new growth?

I gave it a bath today with warm water only. The shell damage looks old. If anyone has any advise on how to deal with she'll damage LMK.

Update.
The guy has been doing great. I dedicated a section of the garden to him and he's set of taking the whole back yard. Fortunately it's brick wall and cement with gates. Our small family dog goes and checks on him every day with zero aggression.
