So I'm sitting here on the computer reading about drift2sea's bout of shell rot, and a gal knocks on the door. She ordered some craw dads from Georgia and this little turtle was in with her shipment. Will I please take it. She said it was a snapping turtle, and I can see why she would make that mistake. Can anyone tell me what kind of mud turtle this is:

Its not easy to see in the picture, but there's a bit of a yellow stripe alongside the neck.

Its up for adoption if anyone is Central Calif. is interested

Thanks, Jeff: I looked up pictures of the Kinosternon subrubrum and that's what he is alrighty.

And Maggie: I think that's just some sort of defense. After I put him down all the swelling went away in an instant.

Can you imagine opening up your order of crawdads and finding a little turtle in there too? Poor thing.

Do you have the mud turtles in New Jersey?

Well, now I'm really confused. It looks like both of them...odoratus and subrubrum.

the yellow stripes on the head say musk but the plastron says mud

I don't really see a hinge. The plastron is just reall teeny, tiny.

It looks like there may be a bit of a hinge across the pectoral scutes. Not much of a one, but it does "give" a bit across there.

I'm glad they spotted the dear little turtle before they threw the crawdads onto the pot!
