I have sealed my snake , Lizard and tort enclosures for over 37 years with polyurethane as long as you use the non toxic safe for kids ( making building blocks, wooden toys etc etc ) you should be fine. What with moist substrate to over turned water bowls it's held up fine in all my enclosures. Though I also use aquarium silicon to seal all seams to boot. But has everyone said try it out for now and see how you like it. Post a photo. Also two different brands should be fine just make sure its the children safe version of whatever you use.
