Actually no. They climb, so it has to be deep enough to keep them safe, and also to discourage climbing. Mine is 12" (30 cm)minimum, and I'd think that's a minimum for a baby, but I'd be inclined to go even higher, 15-18" (about 40-45 cm), but you'd have to use your judgement there.


Ahhh ok thank you, that's no problem I can just double up the sides making them 15" :)

Inside - you might not need a top...unless you have cats...I have cats so I definitely need a top. I think they see the tortoise as a play toy.

Outdoors- it depends where you live. We will need a well-enclosed habitat since we have predators (everything from coyotes to weasels...and hawks etc.)

Yes, you do need a mesh on top. Believe me it is too dangerous. There are all kinds of birds just waiting to grab them.
