Hello! My wife and I recently added a hatchling Sulcata to our family! We are so excited and love him so much! I have a few questions, and would like to let you all see him as well! He is in a temporary setup until his yearling home is setup! First of all Monty's Plastron is a little soft, when he goes into his shell I can feel it bulge out, is this normal? Should I take any precautions if its just a growing stage? Monty, is very active when I take him out he loves to run around with me! I have a few questions about diet as well, It seems there are 7.65 million different ideologies on feeding these guys, is it okay for me to pluck grass and weeds from my yard to feed him or should i buy kale and such to feed? I've also got some Mazuri that the breeder says he liquified and added repti-cal to as a "salad dressing" on top of his food. I may have tons more questions, but I'll start here and leave you all some photos! Also, Monty loves to read Frankies Tortoise Tales with his Daddy! Also, the keeper was only for the short drive home!

Salutations.
A pliable/soft shell is normal sunshine and calcium will make his shell hard, Grass and weeds from your yard is great, as long as they are chemical free. Good choice on food so far.

Thanks for the info! I love this little guy to death and I'm so excited to watch him grow! He seems to really like me so far as he will play around with me and crawl all over me and hang out on my shoulder if I'm reclined with him

Hello and welcome. Here is how I like to house them:

Feed them:

What not to do:

What to look out for with his background:

It is normal for a babies plastron to be somewhat pliable. I compare it to a plastic butter tub lid. It should not feel spongey. Most breeders start them far too dry. How did the breeder of yours start Monty?

Monty's breeder started hin with daily soaking and kept his cocoa fiber substrate very damp, which I have continued since he has been home.

You found a GOOD one! Awesome!

That being the case, with a good diet, UV and a little calcium supplementation, you should never have any plastron problems or any sign of organ failure or MBD.

You are off to a great start. I hope the above threads can help you out, and beware of the copious old outdated misinformation circulating on many popular websites and care sheets.

Thank you! As you mentioned I am wading through the vast knowledge base and trying my best to follow the right info. I read through your intro on sullys and found alot of what I was doing to be pretty close to on par so I'm happy and relieved!
