My tortoise has just turned 6 years old and I am looking to the future and thinking about getting a mate for it and then breeding. I want to make sure I get the same sub-species and correct gender. @HermanniChris can ID subspecies and sex. In the mean time looks like you have a male.

You definitely have a male and it is either an eastern (T. h. boettgeri) or a Dalmatian but I need a carapace and head shot to be certain. Definitely not a western.

Thanks for that - I live in New Zealand and interestingly, the price of a 6 year old female Eastern starts at NZ$6,000 - if you can even find one for sale. An 8 year old sold last week for NZ$8,000 (US$5,800). Males sell for a little less
Wow! Did the exchange rate calculation. That is a lot of money for a tortoise. These sell at the Hamm show in Germany all day long for about $50 Euros. They can be bought here for $150-200 US Dollars.

Tom is right. That’s an insane amount of money. Baby easterns are $150-200 here, Dalmatians $200-ish and pure westerns $450-650 and up. You usually see hybrids for about $300 on the classifieds unfortunately. Adults of all 3 types are much more of course but nowhere near that.
