Read this article, it is not necessarily aimed towards filtering for a turtle aquarium, its more towards fish, but its the same idea, and gives you a pretty good idea of under gravel vs power style filters.

I think lots of keepers have filled you in on the filters. Now, maybe you can add some aquatic plants such as hornwort. You don't have to worry too much about your map eating them as maps have a mainly carnivorous diet. I don't recommend feeding in a seperate tank; the cleaning really gets tedious in the long run. Also, it stresses turtles out which may make her even more reluctant to bask.

Tort101 - yes a lot have and I have seen quite a few variances as well. Like I initially said I want this to be 100% right this time.

Well I have come to my choice...I am getting a Cascade 1000 and NO undergravel.
