Part of my coir substrate on the cool side is getting a white filmy look. Is this from misting with hard water? or is it a mold/mildew growth? If it's the latter, what is my best course of action for it?
Coir does not mold. Be sure there is no food that is molding. Also be sure your cool side is not too cool. Not lower then 80 with a high humidity. As for dealing with the white, I would just stir it up.
Ok... it gets down to about 75 at night. I think I need to re-adjust the heating elements for that side. The average humidity for the entire enclosure averages between 63 and 78% daily.
I'll work on the heating elements on the cool side. thank you
Are the white areas fuzzy like mold or more caked on? If it looks like another layer on top of the coco coir, I'd hazard a guess that you have very hard water.
I occasionally get the same white crust. I originally thought mold, but I'm actually pretty sure it is just mineral deposits from the water. Either way I just scrape it up and throw it away.
Thanks all. I'm guessing it's just hard water. Will keep an eye on it and see if it "grows" at all. If it's anything but hard water, I'll be sure to post here.
