Clear Layer on Shell?

This is something I've noticed a couple years ago, but didn't bother to look into it.

Some of my redfoots have a clear layer on their shells. You can notice it when viewing the edges. I first noticed it a year or so after getting the adults outside (as it wasn't there before), and then when I purchased some younger animals, which I presume to be wild caught upon receiving them.

Any ideas? I can't currently post a picture.

That's the keratin layer. On the edges, because there is no bone underneath it, you can see that it's more or less transparent, just like a fingernail. ;)

Hmmm. I thought there was more to it. I suppose I just didn't notice it until the outdoor enclosure was being used. I assumed it was something that had developed due to them being in a better environment, but I guess not.

The hatchlings have it too, which I guess is no surprise.
