Yes! I've recently been involved in a gopher tortoise conservation project in Florida. I also help them across the road on occasion, and had one living on my property for a while. Goooood stuff!
Cool suite of responses. I've seen a few species in Southern Africa, and some Gopher tortoises in Mississippi.
That first large leopard I saw in Africa was at least the size of a WV beetle, until my eyes calmed down, then it was more the size of a basketball or so. The Gophers gave themselves away - three males all battling for a female - the sound of shells clanking was loud.
It is fun to see that it's not all about pets. I would like to live somewhere with free ranging natural tortoises. But as it is a few pets are what works for me. I hope to travel more to see more.
