I have young Russian tortoise, around 9 months old. I noticed he doesn’t stay up for very long and will usually dig a hole and go to sleep after only being awake for a few hours. Is this normal? Sometimes he’ll stay up for around 7 hours, but today he went to sleep after only being awake for about 5 hours. He’s pretty active when he is awake and all eats all his food. He overall seems fine and healthy. I just concerned about him sleeping so much. Is this a circadian rhythm issue perhaps? Should I put his lights on earlier, they come on around 5:30 early morning

I'm no expert here but I believe tortoises in general sleep a ton like cats and dogs. I think they can sleep up to 19 hours a day.

My 9-month-old western Hermann's tortoise is also like that. Gets up around 9 in the morning, eats, roams, and burrows in the humid-side substrate after 5-8 hours, usually sooner

My Russian has sunlight steaming in his room and on him when the sun comes up around 7am. He still doesn't roam until around 9ish. He eats and then wonders. Takes a break. Wonders. Takes a break. Wonders . I have a pretty walking rock 😁 I think ( and I'm not an expert) your little one is acting healthy. But I think 5:30 is a bit early for the lights. If I were him I be pushing the snooze button 😊😉
