Yapping but not eating

Bruce our 5 year old marginated normally has a great appetite, but the last few weeks - probably due to our terrible summer here in the UK, with it being damp and around 15-20C at best in July, he's been off his food generally, just having small bits, pacing around or sat still and yapping a lot as if he wants to eat. He's not any signs of a cold or anything like that, but seems to want to go to bed a lot. It may be he thinks its the onset of autumn already. We've brought him in on cold wet days and put him in an indoor pen with UVA/UVB lights but this may be confusing to him. My gut is he just prefers being outdoors whatever the weather. Last summer he was eating so much more than he has this time so I'm getting concerned with the cooler months ahead and hibernation. Maybe it's just him slowing down naturally as the weather is so poor?

He needs the proper temps and basking temp to even want to eat and to digest his food. If it's just too cold outside then he needs to stay inside in a proper enclosure or build a heated large hide or shed to keep him outside.

Thanks. He's got a 20 square foot indoor enclosure with 2 x UVA/UVB lights so we'll use this on the cooler days even in summer.

20 SQ ft is only a 5x5, that's not big enough for a much smaller adult Russian let alone a Marginated. He needs more of a room size dedicated to just him if he has to stay inside for longer periods.

Can you post some pictures of your tortoise and his enclosure? What are the temperatures that you maintain for him?

Thanks Tammy it's a 20 sq ft enclosure and the temperature is around 28-39C under the lamps and the cooler areas around 18-22C

Sure, we're just in the process of giving it another deep clean and replacing all substrate so bear with us. But good news is he's eating again, ate lots of dandelion yesterday!
