Wild mushrooms.

Recently, mushrooms started popping up all over my outdoor enclosure. I have been picking them out and discarding them as best I can, but today I found my tortoise sneaking a bite of one I missed. Is there a reason they are appearing out of nowhere? I live in a Orange County, Ca (Huntington Beach to be exact) and the weather has gotten warm this past week. Could the heat cause them? Most of them were in the sphagnum moss I had covering a portion of the ground, so I removed it all, but some of them are random throughout the grass area also.
