So I have been noticing mushrooms popping up in both my torts indoor and outdoor enclosure. Both have organic soil and coco coir. In the outdoor enclosure they are popping up in the tortoise grass i gre for him to eat from and in his indorr enclosure it is poppi g up around his water bowl (nothing planted in enclsore) Should I be worried? Is it okay for him to eat? And any suggestions to get rid of them? Thanks

I wouldn't risk it and get rid of them. Tom just did a thread I believe about a tort that ate mushrooms and died. If you buy them from a store that you know are human safe, then those you can feed.

Some of the wild ones are deadly toxic. Some are totally harmless and edible. People who study them sometimes have difficulty ID'ing them. The safe bet is to remove them and remove the chunk of soil where they came from.

Barb, My thread was about a dead Galop from eating new decorative plants. It was another member whose tortoise ate a poisonous mushroom.

Thanks Tom, and sorry I got the two threads mixed up.

If you purchase or grow identified safe mushrooms then from time to time they will be aok...but I would pull the ones daily from the enclosure area---unless you are a shroom specialist and know the species popping up in your yard...a bite or two from a toxic shroom can harm or prove fatal for the tort...
