If you're referring to the digging into the substrate; yes that is very normal.

It looks like you have a Russian tortoise, they like to dig, explore, and climb. I'm betting that your tort can climb on top of the log and then pull himself up and over the edge. The wall may cause him to fall back into the enclosure.

Good choice for your water bowl.

At some point you will want to build a tortoise table in order to give your tortoise additional space.

I would suggest that you raise the tub off the floor in order to prevent chills from remaining in contact with the floor.

Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually do have him raised from the ground. He's up about two or three feet.

Your right it is a Russian tortoise. This is the biggest tub I found so far. We got him for my 10 yr old boy for Xmas. But it seems like I'm spending more time with him.

He digs down to the bottom of the bin in the same corner. I'm wondering if I need something deeper or something for him to go into. He has the half log that he would go into but not sure if that's enough. Scared to put more needing in feed of him climbing out and falling.

All tips and advice is greatly appreciated.

You can get another of the same tubs and turn it upside down, cut out most of the bottom (which will actually end up being the top) and attach it--lip to lip...this will then allow you to add additional substrate (I would add some earthen type substrate to what you have to allow the tort to dig down deeper...also I would add a couple of plant canopy areas so the tort does not feel so exposed...I mean, a tort is a critter that depends on hiding out under and in plants and such most of the day....:D
