I grew up in the UK as a child and who didn't have a tortoise as a pet when they were a child? LOL I sure did.

You mean he's about 42 year old, and lost all the red? I didn't know that happened. Wow! You must have taken wonderful care of him.

When male RES get real old they become what is called melanistic. That means they lose their normal coloration and all you see is a black turtle with black speckled skin. The stripe of red is now a stripe of black or dark grey.

Congratulations on taking such great care of your RES. It speaks well of your husbandry to have a water turtle live that long in captivity!
