The brief answer to your question is that the US Radiated Tortoise population is very sound and growing rather substantially each year. It is hard to put an exact number on how many babies are being produced yearly because not all breeders register each and every one that they hatch in the studbook as used to be done when there were so few here. That being said, I know four breeders who collectively produce roughly 100-125 or more babies each year. Then there are the institutions such as Gladys Porter Zoo, the Behler Center, and Riverbanks Zoo which also produce babies.

When the Radiated Tortoise Species Survival Program (SSP) was started back in 1984-85, we had only 75 Radiated Tortoises registered in the studbook. As of 20 February 2016, the studbook contains 2,365 Radiated Tortoises. There are also a good number of babies which have been bred and NOT registered as I said earlier.
