UNKNOWN DESSERT TORTOISE

I found this little guy on the side if route 66 in New Mexico! I had to stop and take his picture. When i tried to pet his pretty little shell, he stuck his neck out, and hissed with his mouth open,( i think he was trying to be scary but was really being cute) does anyone know what species of tortoise he is?

Sorry I don't think it a tort but it looks to me to be a ornate box turtle . But they are very good looking isn't he ? But thank you for not taking him home and leaving him on his way and taking a picture for your memory

Im not really a turtle expert , but aren't box turtles suppose to be near water? I didn't really see any lakes or rivers around...

I think your right! I googled box turtles in New Mexico, and I recognized them.

It is a western/desert box turtle or Terrapene ornata luteola.
