Tortoises age

My redfoot is exactly 4 inches in shell length. I've only had him about a week, how old would you consider him to be?

The only way to tell a tortoise's age is to know when it was hatched. You can't tell by looking.

okay there's a little more to it than that, I'd say generally if it still has a yolk sac "scar" it's less than 6 mos, if it still has it's egg tooth it's less than a year, same as if it fits in the palm of your hand and you can still see part of your palm on either side of it. If you can pick it up with one hand w/o even the thought of "I should use two hands so I don't drop this" then I'd say it's less than 3 years..
it is true that you don't know how many DAYS old it is but you can generalize: hatchling, juvenille or adult based on a few of these things
