I have two red footed tortoises (one with red coloring, the other with yellow coloring) and after watching them over the past week - I'm certain I have a male and a female. I have posted photos in the past asking for opinions on whether I have two female tortoises or one male and female. Most of the responses guessed I had two females.
I have seen Iggy bopping his head up and down then side to side, seeming to be flirting with Squirt - and then he continues to mount her.
My only concern is about their age. They are both 6 inches in length and I've guessed they are 5 years old. Should I consider separating them until they're old enough to breed? Will they be fine living with each other?
Here is a video of his behavior from today:

just as a reminder ....males will and often do mount other males, this type of behavior is common among young Rf's. Also , your males of the RF species will start showing "breeding attributes" much younger and smaller than females of the same species. The vid is a perfect example of the size approx. 6" you will start seeing this.
I can assure you the "average and most common" females to produce "viable" (key word) eggs....you looking at 8-12 years of age and 10" plus.
Perhaps I missed some of your other threads.....but some pics of their bottom side could help with the sexing as well for everyone to help out.

JD~:)

Thanks for the response. So I don't have to worry about him hurting her?
Here are some more upclose photos.

I also might add to my above info , that females will also mount other females but you typically don't see this until a more mature age.
this pic= 1406423301663.jpg is a girl .....
this pic ...1406423245834.jpg is also female.........

Yes....it plays a role but from what I can see is tail size ....Ex: The tip of tail to cloaca opening ....also shape.
Mature females may also have indented plastrons ....just not so extreme .

Male
