Well if anyone reads this far into the thread,
1)Always ship on a Monday or Tuesday, that gives you a few business days to sort out this kind of thing.
2) use one of the reptile shipping consolidators "Ship your reptiles" "Reptiles Express" or my favorite "Superior Shipping Supplies", it will cost less and you have someone you can call that has a better proven track record to find the person within FedEx to sort things out better, than a panicked voice call from a tortoise owner.
3) The consolidators all also have online instructions on how to prepare the box, they want your business so act accordingly. Did I say it will cost less.
And lastly, even if you did a modest job on packing the animal, they are pretty tough, as long as there is not some weird temperature high or low (not so likely) most tortoises well endure several days in the box, overnight priority express is always recommended, it's only slightly more expensive, but faster is better.
