Well if anyone reads this far into the thread,

1)Always ship on a Monday or Tuesday, that gives you a few business days to sort out this kind of thing.

2) use one of the reptile shipping consolidators "Ship your reptiles" "Reptiles Express" or my favorite "Superior Shipping Supplies", it will cost less and you have someone you can call that has a better proven track record to find the person within FedEx to sort things out better, than a panicked voice call from a tortoise owner.

3) The consolidators all also have online instructions on how to prepare the box, they want your business so act accordingly. Did I say it will cost less.

And lastly, even if you did a modest job on packing the animal, they are pretty tough, as long as there is not some weird temperature high or low (not so likely) most tortoises well endure several days in the box, overnight priority express is always recommended, it's only slightly more expensive, but faster is better.

Did you label the box:
"live animal"
"live harmless reptile"
"do not place in sun"
"This side up"
....I really hope so

Poke any holes in the box?

How did you package the tort within the box itself?

If you have an absorbent substrate in his container to help absorb waste and the package isn't upside down or sitting in the sun, it's a good chance your tort is going to be ok.

I'm sorry this happened. Please update us when possible.

And I ask those questions to see if the answers can help prevent this from happening to others in the future.
Yes, I labeled "Live Harmless Reptile" and arrows pointing up on ALL sides of the box. He had tons of airholes and was double boxed (airholes in both boxes) he was nestled in a little nest of newspaper and he was in a cloth bag. Also he had a heat pack.

I had priority overnight shipping.... they just lost him... I shipped through Ship your Reptiles and they have been so helpful. I feel like this is 100% Fedex's Fault.

They've found him! He is on his way to fairbanks and will be arriving right as I get out of class! I'm hoping for the best! I just got the call! Thank goodness I didn't have class!
That's great. Sure he will be fine. Nice long warm soak. Give us an update when you actually get him.
