So, it was finally warm enough to let my 6 year old Herman's out for a walk about in the back yard, and what does he do?? He spends an hour or so hunting down and trying to eat the chunks of limestone that my snow-blower had tossed in there over the winter and I'd missed picking up. Is this a sign that I've messed up on his diet, or do I just have the tortoise version of that kid in grade school who kept eating the paste???

Get some cuttlebone from the bird aisle of your pet store and give that to your tort.

They are attracted to white things as a source of calcium, especially when they're growing, so make sure your tort has safe calcium to eat.

If you don't already, sprinkle a tiny pinch of calcium powder on food three times a week - no more often.

My tortoises eat rocks when they are getting ready to lay eggs or whenever there is not enough suitable sources of minerals and calcium.
I always provide cuttlebone.
However, some still seek out and eat rocks and for that reason, I must constantly make sure that no small rocks exist in my enclosures. And that's just about impossible.

Ok, Thanks. He's got cuttlebones already, but rarely touches them. We powder up his salad 3 times a week, so hopefully he's just trying to confuse me.
