Years ago, I read that someone used to pick up her tortoise by slipping her fingers into the gaps where his legs come out of the shell. One time, the tortoise got scared and retracted into the shell, and her fingers were trapped and squished. She wouldn't let the emergency people hurt her tortoise so she just waited until he relaxed, but by that time she had nerve damage.

My 17lb Sully “ Tiny” ( had him since he was just over 2lbs) tried to taste my toe when I wasn’t looking. Fortunately it was only a try & I got my toe outta there before he could really bite down.

I too don’t feed much out of hand unless I have a good distance between finger & food.

Oh wow!! I see what mine does to a cuttle bone, would hurt for sure.
