Hi! My mom recently got me a baby sulcata tortoise (without telling me) so I’m wondering what kind of substrate I should have for him? So far my mom bought a tank (which I’m not sure is okay but I have to make use), a heat lamp, and a little water bowl. I’d also like to know what else is needed.

Oh definitely. From reading this, I can tell our set up is already bad. I’m not sure what to do though since my mom insists on no proper substrate since she’s afraid of smell. I’m not sure if I can even take care of him properly so I’m really worried.

Tell her these changes are not just expensive but necessary for the tortoise. Sulcata tortoises, while often seen as a cheaper and common tortoise species, is actually one of the more expensive tortoise species to look after because of how big they can become.

Fine grade orchard bark has no smell and is the best substrate out there. No offense meant and just being blunt here but a sulcata needs a lot of work to maintain humidity, temps, etc. They need a LOT of space when they are older, and definitely need to be outdoors. In the winter they need a very large heated ”shed” because this type of tortoise doesn’t brumate. Are you sure you are able to provide the correct care, housing, and requirements for this species? If not then I’m sure someone would be more then happy to take your tort, especially lots of folks here.

Of course if you are willing and are financially able to support the little guy/girl then we are more then willing to help you through your journey. Sulcatas are great tortoises and have such an amazing personality. Btw, welcome to TFO!

No offense taken! In fact I understand how much care is needed for them but unfortunately I can’t provide it. Ever since my mom brought him home I’ve been anxious because I don’t think my mom realizes how much responsibility these guys require :( I’m open to finding a new home for him if I can convince my mom. I’d rather him go as soon as possible before it’s too late. I want him to be a happy tort.

Show her this thread, it might help. I’m sure lots of people here would love to take your baby. Just a word of advice if you do decide to find a new home for him/her. Be careful of new members who only post when there is a free tortoise available. Some people just take them and give them terrible care and sell them off for a high price.

Thank you for your advice! Where can I post about re-homing for my tort?
