If you're only hearing it when he gets scared, I'd say no, not a RI infection.

Since I've been on the forum, though, I've been hearing quite a bit that folks take their tortoise to the vet due to them making clicking or squeaking sounds and turns out they have a RI infection. So you can't really rule it out. How big is your tortoise?

One of my new hatchlings (The Dude) sometimes hisses when I pick him up. I also have RES and she hisses the same way when I pick her up or wave my hands in front of her face. But I am just curious, do Cherries produce any sounds in the wild?

I have a redfoot that makes a "peep peep" sound when she's (seemingly) happy. She makes her throat go in and out and walks around. Of course, I don't know if she makes the noise when we're not around. She did have a RI when we got her from prior mishandling, so perhaps it did some permanent damage to her nasal passages, but she doesn't sound like that all of the time.

I've always wondered if other people's RFs made these kind of sounds, too.

No idea about the wild but both of mine make a hiss sound when they put their heads in their shell quickly ... I suspect just the explusion of air from their lungs .... kinda like 'pneumatic deflation'

Oh, now I remember reading about it too somewhere too, about putting "their heads in their shell quickly". Thank you!
