Glad I found this page. I am the mom to an almost 12 year old Sulcata tortoise, Hoover, whom I've had for 11 years. I soon will be getting 2 Leopard tortoise hatchlings. I live in Minnesota, so will be waiting until it gets a little warmer before I have them shipped. Any suggestions on the best UV lighting for the hatchlings. I'm getting everything ready in plenty of time before their arrival.

Hello and welcome.

Things have changed a lot since you raised your sulcata so many years ago. I would strongly suggest you not get a pair. Get one or get three or more. Here is some current info for you:

Also, you didn't say where you are getting them, so please be aware that most breeders start them far too dry. Chronic dehydration in their first few days and weeks will frequently lead to their death months down the road, even if you do everything "right". Please read this thread BEFORE you buy. It will tell you what to ask and what to watch out for. If the seller is already advising you to get a pair, everything else he/she says is suspect too.

So glad for all of the welcomes and advice from other members. Before I purchased my Leopards, I researched this breeder and have heard nothing but good comments about her. She did not suggest that I buy a pair, that was my decision. In fact, all of her eggs were incubated to be females. In fact, my two have different parents, so they are not related. My pic is of the December 17th hatchling that I chose. She holds all of her hatchlings until they are at least 8 weeks old before she ships, and just asks for a small deposit on the tortoise, and is willing to hold mine even longer until the weather is warmer in Minnesota. :D
