I am thinking about building my future Hermann tortoise a house. I am completely new to tortoises and I am not sure how wide Herman tortoises get. So therefor how big do you suggest I have my housing be if my tortoise will be 6 inches. I was thinking a 20inch x 48inch x 8inches high.

You can't really go by the size the tortoise will grow to. Just because a tortoise is small doesn't mean you can keep him in a small enclosure. They need a lot of room to wander. And the bigger you make the enclosure, the more visual barriers you can put in it. For instance, in your 4' x almost 2' enclosure, once you get the food dish and waterer, the hiding place (or two), a "boulder" and a few plants put in around the area there's not all that much room left on the floor for wandering. So bigger is always better.

Having said all that, I don't keep Hermanni, so I really have no experience with what they need. Just sayin.
