Hi Everone,
I got tow hermann tortoises last week and both hopefully female, two months old. after reading several articles and help from other members on here I have decided to seperate them. One settled immediatley and the other barely ate and yesterday had the best meal Ive seen her eat so far. At first they seemed to be okay then kept going ontop of each other. after posting on here and advise to seperate i have another enlcosure coming in the next day. yesterday I saw one biting the others head at the food dish even though I have put two food dishes down in diferent spots. my husband is convinced that they are just playing and thinks I am being over cautious , but after looking over lots of articles, am seperating.
my main question is , which one should I move ? the enclosures will have to be in different rooms. Is that a mistake , the room they were to be together is really too small for another but we have a dining room that has plenty of room for one. I was thinking the one that took a while to settle I may leave where she is and maybe completly replicate the other enclosure. is this a good idea? I also added screening in the old enclosure to distract as advised.
sorry for long winded comment.

I agree that you are doing the right thing by separating them. Different rooms is fine and leaving the one that took awhile to settle seems like a good idea. She'll be so relieved to not be bullied anymore. Well done!

Keep the more aggressive one in that original enclosure since he already thinks it's his territory.
The other one will settle down faster in the new home once it no longer is being bullied.
And no.
They aren't playing.
Tortoises are solitary.

Thank you. I wouldn't of thought that a 2 month old would behave like that. So many people see it as cute, and to be honest before I read this forum, Maybe I did.

It is unusual for the behavior to start that early.
But there's no timeframe for normal. Normal is that pairs don't do well, eventually.
I was just talking to someone on a Facebook forum that argued FOR keeping a pair (of Russians) together. They'd been together for years."Sleeping together and following each other around" because they were friends.
Well, one just bit the tail off of the other and part of a foot.
