I came across this picture on a tortoise discussion forum.

The owner lives in a flat but he decided to have a large tort anyway. Very soon he can not afford enough indoor space for it to roam around ("it knocks down everything in the room") and outdoor is not an option. So he puts the poor tort on that column all day long except for a meal break.

He is very proud of his brilliant idea, he thinks the tort is still free to move his feet or take a rest whenever it wants.

This person should be reported for animal cruelty!

Would be nice if we could put him up on a column to spend his day too.

Hard to beleive that is true, but people do the darndest things!
If you can EDUCATE that person, DO IT QUICK,, or re home the tort asap with others help..
if not.. report him.
I would think that that tort could wriggle and fall off that column. how high off the ground is it?
How big is that animal?
Please help it....

considering the story.. the tort looks in good shape...

I don't believe that story. I think he could wiggle himself off easily. The pipe is pretty small in diameter, and I think that with just a small amount of arm flailing he'd fall. Maybe he was trying just to get a rise out of people, and made a controversal story up to go with the pic. That's what I think anyway. It is a good way to weigh larger tortoises, though. They sit pretty calmly.

I'm going to throw up if that's true!! I'm so disgusted with the human race at times.

WOW. I can't believe that. That is sooooo wrong. People like that should be "disposed of".

Awful! I wish I could read what he wrote. It looks like he has plenty of room for the tort to roam.

I just can't believe it. I don't understand how any one could think that this is anything but cruel.

here is a link to the original post on that forum. Don't know if you can see the pictures without an account.

He posted 4 pictures from different angles, would someone please tell if that tort can really stay on that column for long? I have zero experience with larger torts.

I can tell you, Yes! Some times, not often, we use a drug to clean our female aldabras out if we suspect they are egg bound and unable to lay. We place them on large buckets, centered, and they can not wiggle off.

I don't think it is true,

I have tried this technique for weighing larger torts on my small scales, and believe me it does not work. They wriggle so much they fall of.

I don't doubt Greg for once second, but I had a 150 pound sulcata on an upside down 5 gallon bucket for a beak trim and we had to keep a hand on him so he wouldn't wiggle off. He nearly fell off several times.

Even if it is BS some idiot is going to see it and think it is a good way to keep a tort and try it.
