My heart drops when I read or know that someone's pet tortoise passed away. Sad. I am so very sorry. What kind on tortoise was it? Any clue as to what may have happened? Rest in peace little tortoise. Sigh.

Is his roommate also a sulcata? They, experience keepers , say that having two together can be a problem because of physical or psychological bullying. Do you think that might have been it. If so, the experienced keepers may be right. Bummer.

So sorry for your loss. However, like mentioned, sulcatas should not be housed together, unless you have a very large enclosure and lots of sight barriers and separate huts, water and food bowls. If there were no signs of illness, this could be a death from bullying:(

I think we/you need to figure out how/why the other died first before rushing into getting another one.
Your current one probably will not like a new friend... just enjoy what you have for now and make sure its healthy..
Sorry for the loss..

Agreed. If there's was a way to prevent what happened the first time why not take the effort to do so. Fix your initial problem then fill the void.

2.5 year old sulcatas don't normally die. I'd be much more inclined to help you find another if I knew what went wrong.

BTW, do you know that pairs seldom work out? Was this the issue?

We'd be glad to help here.

Guys,

I appreciate all the support and comments. Yes I have heard that 2 sulcatas dont normally work out. Not the case here. These little guys would follow each other around all day and always slept touching each other. The tortoise died while being watched by a friend. It looks like either a small dog or raccoon made its way in the enclosure as it was accidentally left open by a child. Very sad situation for us and our friend. Thanks again for the nice comments

I keep my Tortoises together and have never had a problem. One is seven and the other is four. Big size difference but never any bullying.

Never any bullying YET. Hopefully it won't ever happen, that is possible, but not too probable. Keep and eye out for it.

I am so sorry to hear your tortoise passed away. (I am relieved that it wasn't something contagious, for the safety of your other tortoise). There is a good chance another tortoise would not get along as they did,so keep this in mind.
How difficult for your friends, slip ups are so easy to do, even for the owners.
Best wishes for everyone recovering from this.

So sorry! Where are you located? The CTTC always has sulcatas looking for homes.

Aw, I'm so sorry. :( freakin wild animals... I had a hawk take away one of my kittens, while playing in the yard, as a kid... I was so heartbroken. :( I wish all the animals would get along & be nice to each other... Sigh. I'm so very very sorry for your baby. :*(
