This is something I just finished last night in my outdoor leopard enclosure. I don't know why, but I just really like the whole idea of it and though I would share.
The closer one in the pic is about 2x3' and the far one is about 3x4'. I made the frames out of old scrap 2x4s that were almost thrown out and the wire on top is left over scraps from previous projects. I broke up and turned the soil and removed three five gallon buckets worth, and then replaced it with "Kelloggs" garden soil for planting vegetables and flowers. I mixed the new soil and the old dirt and leveled it out. I planted Red Palestine Clover in the small one and Non-dormant Alfalfa in the big one, and then put a light cover of the planting soil over the seeds. I bought the seeds from Peaceful Valley Farms here: http://www.groworganic.com/ I've been very happy with this company and bought lots of stuff from them over the last two years. Good prices and excellent service and quality.
Here's a close up of the smaller one:
Here's a close up of the bigger one:
You can see some of the tortoises are impatiently awaiting the coming feast. I figure I'll keep posting updates as the sprouts take off, and then of course I'll document the big day of the unveiling...
