Organic peat moss

Is organic peat moss safe to mix in for a substrate ?

Yes. That's what I use then throw top soil over it. Peat moss is great to retain humidity.

Would you ever mix a little clean sand ?

Sand is not recommended because it can cause impaction if accidentally ingested.

I use organic peat moss alone as substrate. I don't mix anything into it.

It hold humidity so great, even I have a little! My russian loves to bury himself in it... kind of a nice humid hide.
