Hi everybody,

I'm new here! We are considering getting a tortoise and I've been reading a bit on the forum for the past week or so to start my research. I've kept exotics before (snakes and lizards) but never a tortoise, which is a whole different ball game. But the importance of a controlled temp/humidity environment is something I have experience with.

I do have a direct question, but can put in a separate thread if more appropriate. Where I live in Chepstow, South Wales, there is a specialist tortoise shop (not sure if I am allowed to name them or not?). However, it is currently only open by appointment only. Thing is, I don't know their reputation and I know not all specialist shops are created equal. I know there's a few well-established members on here from around my area, having tried some searches and reading about the International Tortoise Association in Sully (interesting views on that place - I've never been so have no opinion!). I'd love to hear from anybody that knows of the shop in Chepstow and if they recommend it. If it is recommended as a reputable place, then I will book an appointment and go in to speak to them as well.

Oh, we are considering a Hermanns or Horsfield - something around that size anyway! Loads of research to do before even committing to thinking about the jump though!

Looking forward to learning more!

Alex 😁

Hi and welcome. It is good your researching, We're now exiting covid restrictions so not sure why they operate appt only my reptile shop was open as normal throughout as they were allowed for pet supplies I would look elsewhere at open busy shops that you can walk in and see the animals and discuss or cross the border to England 😂

We have breeders on this forum based in USA but please read this care sheet to help you with set up.

I think biggest current challenge is electricity unit price increase as heat lamps are not cheap!

There is also British Chelonian Group who may have a tortoise for adoption?

You have some ideas to consider. There are many brits on this forum so your in good company :):tort::):tort:
