I'm afraid you're going to have to give me the latin name of your species. I'm unfamiliar with an "eastern" mountain tortoise. And quite often the "mountain" tortoise moniker is used erroneously for a forest tortoise.

You've posted this thread in the North American Gopherus section. I'm unaware of any mountain tortoises in the Gopherus species.

What species have you got? The latin name, or a pic? Where are you?

I did a Youtube search for "eastern mountain tortoise" and all that came up were the burmese mountain tortoise videos. A russian and a Burmese are very different, and nothing is alike about them, especially their care. In order for us to help you we have to know what you have.

Then it must be one of the Testudo tortoises. Please post a picture.

OK, Eastern Box Turtle. I'd set it up with coco coir bedding, closed chamber to keep humidity up (keep moisture in substrate), standard stuff. Feed him plants and vegetables like a tortoise, but add additional protein items like small worms, tubifex worms, etc. Feed 4-5 times a week. As he gets older, his preference will change to more and more plant matter. A large but shallow water dish like a plant saucer should be in there. Get a UVB bulb (I have no issue with CFL's use them all the time and know they are safe) and I would get a 50 watt ceramic heater and a 5 watt or so under tank heater. Temp should be 82-84F. Have night temps around 75F. I usually get this by turning off the CHE at nite and let under tank heater stay on. Provide a hide. Turn of uvb bulb at night. This will work in a 10-15 gallon tank for the first year.

Take care of him well and you will really enjoy him.
