Recently added a section with mud substrate for my tortoise. He went in a couple of times but is now completely avoiding it. Does anyone know why and what I can do differently?

What kind of tortoise do you have? How old is it? There's no way to answer your questions without that info.

Hi, thank you!
It’s an Eastern Hermanns tortoise, 2 years old in July

Why? Because that is the wrong substrate to use. Tortoises do not need or want mud.
What you can do differently? Use the correct substrate.

After you've read the above, please feel free to ask any questions you have. We want to help you help your tortoise thrive!

It is important to know the type of tortoise you have so that you know how this particular species evolved. Does it need high humidity, or go into stasis for a few months per year? What does it eat? How big will it get? Unless you know where that species came from, you won't be able to figure out what is best for it.

Here're a couple other threads that may help or inspire -
Note - no mud in any case.

And this may help save you some money, or worry, or damage to your tortoise.

Hi and welcome to the forum, it's a great place for reliable and important information!
What are the ingredients in that Tortoise Life package of substrate?
Can we see your tortoise's setup, if you can post some pictures?
